Cat on a Hot Tin Roof Auditions
By Tennesse Williams
Performing March 5-7, 2027 at Het Amsterdams Theaterhuis
Directed by Barbie Insua
About the Play
On a sweltering night in the Mississippi Delta, the Pollitt family gathers to celebrate Big Daddy's sixty-fifth birthday. He believes he's just been given a clean bill of health. Most of the people around the table know otherwise, and all of them have their eyes on what he'll leave behind.
Upstairs, his favorite son, Brick, a former athlete on a broken ankle, is drinking his way toward oblivion. His wife, Maggie, is fighting to win back a husband who won't touch her and to secure their place in a family that would happily push them out.
Tennessee Williams's Pulitzer Prize–winning drama Cat on a Hot Tin Roof explores the ravages of grief, greed and fear. An uneasy portrait of a wealthy Southern family torn apart by unspoken desires and deceit.

Character Descriptions
Please note that all characters must have an American Southern accent, preferably Deep South, and for your self-tapes, please ensure to do all monologues in typical American Deep South style accents. Below you will find the character descriptions for each of the open roles we are casting for.
Brick Pollitt
Gender / Playing Age: Male, late 20s to mid-30s
Vocal / Physical Style: Guarded, brooding, physically athletic (uses a crutch due to a broken ankle), quiet intensity.
Character Overview: A former high school athletic star and TV sports announcer now drowning in alcoholism. Brick has emotionally checked out of life following the tragic suicide of his close friend, Skipper, and the complex, unspoken nature of their relationship. He is disgusted by the "mendacity" (hypocrisy and lies) of the world and his family.
Audition Note: Actors should convey deep internal anguish and emotional numbness without being passive. The performance hinges on subtext, quiet anger, and sudden bursts of raw emotion.
Big Mama (Ida) Pollitt
Gender / Playing Age: Female, late 50s to 60s
Style: Warm, loud, emotional.
Character Overview: Big Daddy's wife of forty years, wholly devoted to a husband who rarely returns the favor. She wants her family gathered and happy, and she isn't always graceful about getting there.
Audition Note: Looking for warmth, humor, and big, open emotion.
Gooper Pollitt ("Brother Man")
Gender / Playing Age: Male, mid-30s to early 40s
Style: Formal, controlled, precise.
Character Overview: Brick's older brother, a Memphis lawyer with a wife, five children, and another on the way. He has done everything that was asked of him and watched his brother get the love anyway. He's come home for his father's birthday with more than a present in mind.
Audition Note: Show us his side of the story.
Mae Pollitt ("Sister Woman")
Gender / Playing Age: Female, early 30s to late 30s
Style: Bright, sweet, sharp underneath.
Character Overview: Gooper's wife and the mother of their growing brood. Busy, relentlessly "on," and very aware of what's at stake this weekend.
Audition Note: Strong comic timing, and someone who can hold her own in a crowded, noisy room.
Reverend Tooker
Gender / Playing Age: Male, 40s to 60s
Style: Genial, polite, eager.
Character Overview: The family's minister and a guest at the birthday party, who never forgets the church's interests or the Pollitts' generosity.
Audition Note: Funny, but not a caricature.
Doctor Baugh ("Doc Baugh")
Gender / Playing Age: Male, 50s to 70s
Style: Calm, measured, weary.
Character Overview: The family's longtime physician and old friend, who knows more about Big Daddy's health than he's been allowed to say.
Audition Note: A grounded, unhurried presence.
The Pollitt Children ("The Children")
Playing Ages: Typically 6 to 12 years old (boys and girls).
Named Roles in Script: Dixie, Buster, Sonny, Trixie, and Polly.
Style: Loud, lively, well rehearsed.
Character Overview: Gooper and Mae's children, brought along for Big Daddy's birthday and coached by their mother to sing, perform and say all the right things to their grandfather. When they're not performing, they're running wild through the house.
Audition Note: Looking for young actors with lots of energy who are happy to be noisy and playful onstage, and who can also sing or perform a short rehearsed number together.
